Growing up and spending my school years in Uitenhage, here in the Eastern Cape, was great because it’s surrounded by natural areas and situated close to the ocean. This nurtured my love for nature and conservation. I was fortunately chosen to join the Umzi Wethu Training Academy run by the Wilderness Foundation. This program gives individuals the opportunity to obtain a qualification in Nature Conservation and step into the workplace after finishing training. I was very happy when I was placed at Shamwari Game Reserve in October 2010, after successfully obtaining my FGASA Level 1 Field Guide qualification. I’m still here and love everyday at this iconic conservation orientated reserve. What I love about Shamwari is that everything revolves around the conservation and protection of the natural environment, which in this day and age is so critically important. Being a game ranger gives you the chance to educate people from all over the globe to do the same in their own countries. My motto in life is that no matter how wise a man may think he is; the wilderness always has something new to offer him. By Ntobeko Ngcala
